Mature trees, kept in shape

Many Southside gardens have trees that are as old as the houses. Often the right job is not to take the tree out but to reduce the crown, lift low branches off a roof or drive, or take out the deadwood.

We will tell you plainly which option suits the tree, and we take the whole tree down in sections when that is what is needed.

Protected trees in Southside

About half of Glasgow’s 25 conservation areas are on the Southside. They include East Pollokshields, West Pollokshields, Strathbungo, Newlands, Dumbreck, Crosshill, Shawlands Cross, Millbrae, Snuffmill and Carmunnock.

If your tree is inside one, you must give Glasgow City Council six weeks’ notice in writing before any work, including pruning. It is an offence to start within that notice period.

Some trees also have a Tree Preservation Order, which means the council’s permission is needed first.

This is a general guide, checked against the council’s own pages in October 2026. Rules and boundaries change, so confirm with Glasgow City Council before booking work.

Questions about tree work in Southside

Which parts of the Southside do you cover?

All of it. That takes in the G41, G42, G43, G44 and G45 postcodes, including Shawlands, Newlands, Pollokshields, Strathbungo, Langside, Cathcart, King’s Park and Castlemilk, and Carmunnock.

My house is in a conservation area. Can I still have a tree pruned?

Yes, but Glasgow City Council needs six weeks’ written notice first. Pollokshields, Strathbungo, Newlands, Dumbreck and Crosshill are among the Southside conservation areas. It is worth checking with the council before booking work.

Can you reduce a tree without removing it?

Yes. A crown reduction brings down the height and spread while keeping a balanced, natural shape. Crown lifting raises low growth clear of paths, drives and roofs.
